Years ago when I was 18 years old I decided to join the Military. The reason why I joined was because I needed to get out of Bronx and at the same time I needed to experience the world and how it works and the military is the only place I could do that.

While still in my Senior Year of High School I went to a Recruiter and asked to join. The Recruiter quickly went into his Sales Pitch about how I can get money for college and learn a new skill while working there which you can turn and use in the civilian world.

I was naïve and it did not know what to expect and once I graduated from High School and enjoyed my last summer as a teen before I went into the world of Adulthood.

September came and I was on my way one morning at 4am. While sitting in the car scared out of mind and regretting my decision once I left my Mom and Dad behind. I felt alone and It was all up to me now. Whatever happens happens.

The Bus pulled into the Training Station in Great Lakes and I remember the DI’s yelling and screaming at the new recruits to line up on the yellow line and if you were slow to move you would get cursed out.

I was thinking to myself “What the fuck did I do!” This is not what I thought it would be. It was 3am before we went to bed and while laying there I could hear the other Recruits laying in the bunks around me whimper and cry quietly. I remember laying there trying to sleep but the crying was making me feel like I needed to cry but I held fast and told myself this is what I wanted to do. There is no giving up now!

While there going through 16 weeks of Boot Camp I have learned many things from the Drill Instructor which I still use today in life. I will write out below what lessons they taught me and the platoon I was in.

  1. Respect yourself:

This is something they ingrain in you everyday! You are an adult now and will need to learn self respect of yourself and others. In life respect plays a big part in the individual’s life but for many people their view of respect is wrong. Its not how tough you are but how well you can handle situations around you.
